Dogs in the Bed – Do you cuddle up with Fido?
The answer is it depends on you and your dog.
- Does it affect your sleep? Absolutely.
- Does it affect your relationship with your dog? Maybe.
I grew up in an era where dogs weren’t even in the bedroom, let alone the bed! My childhood dog Max had her little area in the laundry room. When I got my Isabelle I tried to get her to sleep in her own little bed next to mine but she was having none of it and I caved after the first night. She slept next to me under the covers every night of her life. For us it worked. We didn’t experience any relationship woes because of it and I slept better knowing in my little heart that my dog was happier. When we got Casey we tried desperately to crate train her but she was painfully aware that her sister was in the bed and why wasn’t she!? So when Madeleine came along we didn’t even try lol.
Now these are little dogs and yes they are bed hogs but at least we can easily shift them. Jet however is not a bed sleeper. We allowed him to be on the bed his first few nights home to ease the transition but he found it uncomfortable whether that was from heat (it was August) or the extreme disgust his new sisters were throwing in his direction. He just preferred sleeping on the floor. He was quickly crate trained though and now that his crate is too big for our bedroom he’s in the room across the hall.
It works for us.
Some studies show that a pet in the bed drastically affects your sleep. Some trainers believe it allows the dog too much say in what happens in their house and leads to other behavior issues. I’m sure both can be true to some dogs. If your dog is growling at you for trying to get into your own bed than yes you have a problem. If your dog is a resource guarding type then you may need to think carefully. If you are training for a championship level dog sport, the bed may not be right because you need to build the want for your dog.
Will there be sleepless or sleep affected nights? Yes, everyone has rough nights – dogs included! But for me waking up to a furry little face makes up for it all. How about you?
